Bread Gulugulu

Does that name sound any horn? Am sure not. Because that name was given for the dish by me and Resh. The name has a story in it which most of my friends don't know. Don't even think the name came from Gulu a city in Uganda. Gulu gulu is a french word meaning the sound "glug glug" which represents a person drinking beer. Even though I don't drink, I used to prepare this dish for my friends and this was one of their favorite side dish (touchings of achaar and pickles :) ) goes good with beer. They used to tell me that they can take more beer in when they have this side dish. :) Don't be surprised!!... they said that just to make sure that I prepare this dish for free for all their beer party night
s. Jokes apart... this dish is very easy to prepare and one, eggitarians will love to have. This can be a quick breakfast dish or a snack during the coffee time or as I explained earlier a side dish for party or a potluck. Even though am not a big egg lover, I love this dish as its quick and tasty!

The preparation and measurements given below are approximate as i don't use any measuring instrument.

Ingredients (for 2 Persons):
  • Bread Medium Size(White/Wheat) - 12 slices (hand cut to make small half inch cubes)
  • Egg Average (Normal/Organic) - 2-3
  • Onion Medium Size - 1 (thinly sliced)
  • Green Chillis Small - 2
  • Curry Leaves - 5 leaves
  • Oil (Veg/Olive/Corn) - 2 tsp
  • Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
  • Garlic Crushed or Paste - 1/2 tsp
  • Ginger Crushed or Paste - 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Red Chilli powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Salt to taste

Method:
Put the oil and heat a pan on medium flame. Put mustard seeds. When its spluttering add sliced onion and green chillis and let the onion turn light brown. Add curry leaves, garlic and ginger and saute it for sometime to leave the garlic smell. Now add the turmeric powder and red chilli powder. Saute it for another few minutes and put salt to taste. Now put the cut bread pieces and mix well. Keep the bread for sometime on low flame to get the warm and little crisp taste to the bread. Mix it regularly as we are not using any water here. Once all the bread pieces has become warm break the egg one by one right on top of the bread. Make sure you don't mix the egg separately which will help you to get mixture of white and yellow colors on the bread. Now mix the bread pieces well till the egg paste is hardened and till we have all the bread pieces with think layer of egg. Depending up on your choice you can keep the mixed bread on low flame for some more time to get more hard and crispy taste. Make sure you taste the dish before you take out of flame. Add salt to taste. Adding a little bit of crushed black pepper on top of warm bread would be a great idea to get some spiciness and smell.

You have your bread gulugulu ready.... Let me know your thoughts and modifications to the dish, if you tried the taste :).
